This is How You Switch Off Your Instagram Online Status

In case you have not noticed, Instagram chat looks similar to Facebook Messenger: your followers will be able to know when you are active on the app, and when your last login was thanks to the Instagram online status feature.

Just like Facebook Messenger, a small green bubble will appear next to your name when you are online.

But this only applies to followers who have already chatted with you via Instagram Direct Messaging. So if you have already interacted with someone via Instagram Direct Messaging, then you will be able to see their Instagram online status, the last time they are logged in, and when they are typing something to you.

How Instagram Online Can Benefit You

According to Instagram, the Instagram online feature is meant to make conversation easier on the app. So if you see your friends online, you can easily say β€˜Hello’. This feature will enhance real-time conversations and at the same time, give you the control to hide your status. Yes, your friends do not always need to know when you are online on Instagram.

This initiative will encourage more people to spend more time on the app and chat. The app is very similar to Facebook Messenger, where people can easily swap conversations, photos and videos; even make video calls!

Furthermore, the Instagram app allows its users to send messages to multiple users at once! This is especially great for artists who want to make a quick announcement about their latest shows or new albums to their fans, or businesses that are about to launch a new product.

How to Switch Off Your Instagram Online Status

While Instagram finds their effort to be beneficial for all their users, not everybody feels the same. Some of us might feel uncomfortable letting people know how much time we spend on Instagram.

If you are concerned about your privacy, fortunately you can switch off your activity status. This is how you do it:

  1. Open the Instagram app and click on the three-horizontal-line icon on the top right corner of your screen.
  2. Tab on Settings and scroll down until you see Activity status.
  3. 3. Tap on the slider next to the Show activity status option. When the slider is switched on, it turns blue. But when it is switched off, it turns grey.

Bear in mind that when you turn off this feature, you will not be able to see the activity status of other Instagram users.

But do you think switching off your online status is a good idea? If you use Instagram to connect with friends and perhaps expand your social circles, then you might regret it when people just stop messaging you because they think you are rarely online.

So, to hide or not to hide your Instagram online status? Well, that depends on how much you value your interactions with your friends and followers on Instagram. It can be really annoying when people are constantly sending you messages every time they notice that you are online.

Yeah, maybe you are just scrolling your news feed on your bed just before you sleep. You might not find it necessary to reply Instagram messages at that time. But how would your friends react to you not replying their messages even when you are online?

In the end, only you know what is best for you. So if you feel the need to switch off your Instagram online status, then do it. Otherwise, just let it on. At least you will get to see who is online, too.
