The first way to send messages on Instagram starts off by beginning going to the home page. This is the best option if you want to send messages to multiple people, text, gifs, media from camera roll, video chat.

How to send message:

  1. Open the Instagram app
  2. Go to the home screen on Instagram
  3. Swipe to the left. Then, you will see all your recent messages that you have sent and received.
  4. Next, you can either select a recent conversation or search a user to start a new one.
  5. To search for a user, tap the pencil icon on the top right corner of the screen. Then, type in the user’s name. If making a group chat, select the users you’d like to add.
  6. Next, tap “chat”
  7. Now, you’ll be able to send your message! If you have messaged this user previously, your recent messages will show up on the screen.

t. This is best option if you want to send: An existing photo or video to someone with the option to add text. For example, funny memes.

How to send message:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Go to the existing post that you want to send.
  3. Tap the paper airplane icon. This is located next to the like and comment button. Sending a message this way will automatically attach the photo you selected.
  4. Next, select the user you’d like to send the photo or video to. Again, you may have to search the person’s username if they are not in your recent conversations.
  5. Lastly, hit send. Wasn’t that easy?

Tip: Keep in mind, if the post you are sending is from a private account, the user you send it to will only be able to see it if they follow that account as well. If not the user will see the message “This photo is hidden because @username has a private account.”

This is the best option if you want to send: Messages to one user at a time, text, gifs, media from camera roll, or video chat

How to send message:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Go to the users profile that you’d like to send a message to
  3. On the user’s profile, you should see a “message” option.
  4. Tap “message” and you’ll instantly be able to send an Instagram message to that one person!

We recommend this option if you are sending a message to just one person. If you’d like to add more people. either use a different option or you can add more users later.

Can I send Instagram messages using a computer?

The short answer: Not yet!

The long answer: If you look at a profile on the desktop version, you’ll see that the buttons to send direct messages are not there. Currently, Instagram does not let users send messages through the desktop website. However, it may not be impossible!

There are multiple browser extensions you can download to be able to view direct messages on a desktop. However, none of them are made by Instagram. But who knows, maybe sending messages using a computer will be a new update sometime soon!

One of the best parts about Instagram direct messaging is that you can make group chats with others. Did you know that you can make a group chat with up to 32 people? Here is how you can send messages on Instagram to a group of users:

  1. Open the Instagram app
  2. Swipe to the left from the home screen
  3. Tap the pencil icon located at the top right corner of the screen
  4. Next, select all the users you would like to message
  5. Lastly, tap “chat”. Now you’ve started a group message

Once you’ve started your group chat, you are able to make a group name and add other users if desired. To make or change a group name, go to the “i” icon located at the top right corner of the screen. In this view, you can add/change the group name, as well as mute messages and view the members.
