Instagram is undeniably the leading app for photo sharing today. There are millions of new photos and videos shared there every day. Instagram allows photo browsing, liking and bookmarking. But it doesn’t give users the option to save Instagram photos directly to any device.
If you’re wondering on how to save Instagram photos from any device, you’re not alone. Maybe you have uploaded a photo using the Instagram in-app camera (which will be automatically saved to your phone’s picture gallery), but accidentally deleted it. The only copy you have is the one posted on Instagram. Maybe you saw a nice quote on someone else’s Instagram and you want to share it with your peers.
Whatever your reason is, there are different Instagram photo dimensions, and there are ways for you to save Instagram photos from any device. Here are some of the best ways to do it.
How to Save Instagram Photos Using Screenshots
The easiest way to save an Instagram photo is by simply taking a screenshot of the photo of your choice. This is how you do it:
- Go to the photo post of your choice. You might see a humanoid icon (to show that it has tagged other accounts on the photo) on it. Tap on the photo so you won’t see the icon appear on the photo.
- Then, take a screenshot of the photo.
- Visit your phone’s photo gallery to find the screenshot. You’ll likely be able to find it under ‘Screenshots’.
- Open the image and click on ‘Edit’.
- Crop the image anyhow you like.
- Once you’re done editing, click on ‘Save’.
How to Screenshot an Instagram Story
Since Instagram stories are usually displayed in full-screen (unless they’re pinched towards the center of the screen), some of them make wonderful phone wallpapers. Some photographers share beautiful photos to their Instagram this way so people could use them as wallpapers for their phones.
You can screenshot the Instagram story of your choice and edit it later, the same way you do it for an Instagram photo post. But there’s a better way to do it. Here’s how:
- When you view an Instagram story, you will see the name of the user at the top left corner of your screen. To make the overlay disappear (so it won’t appear on your screenshot), tap anywhere on the screen (this will pause the story), and quickly take a screenshot of it.
- Some phones have different screenshot techniques, so use whatever that works for you. Most phones these days will allow you to take a screenshot by having your fingers held on the screen.
How to Bookmark Photos on Instagram
You don’t have to download Instagram photos to your phone if you don’t need to. Instagram lets you bookmark the pictures and organize them like Pinterest boards, so you can easily find them back again next time — straight from your Instagram profile.
Using the bookmark feature, you can keep the picture you want to look at again. You can create as many collection folders as you like. To create it:
- Go to your Instagram profile. Click on the icon with three horizontal lines at the top right corner of the screen.
- Then, click on ‘Saved’.
- Tap on the add icon (+) and give your collection a name.
- Once you’ve created the collection folder, tap on any of the pictures displayed on your screen to add them to the folder you want.
You can create your collection folder and leave it empty if you have yet to have any picture saved or bookmarked.
But if you’re ready to bookmark an image on Instagram, all you have to do is go below the image you want to save and tap the bookmark icon on the right corner.

4K Stogram is an Instagram viewer that you can use for downloading Instagram photos, videos and stories to your PC, macOS and Linux. You can even use it to download photos and videos from private Instagram accounts. Unlike DownloadGram, 4K Stogram requires you to download the software.

Step 1: Download 4K Stogram to your computer.
Step 2: Once installed, open the program and type in an Instagram username, hashtag, or location into the search bar.
Step 3: Click on ‘Subscribe’.

This might be a little scary to do if you know nothing about coding, but don’t let a bit of code discourage you from trying! It’s actually pretty easy! Follow the steps below to learn how to do it.
Step 1: Go to the Instagram website.
Step 2: Look for the Instagram photo you want to save and click on it.
Step 3: To open the page source, right click and select ‘View Page Source’. It will automatically open in a new tab.

Step 5: You will see a JPG or PNG link after the meta property ‘content=’. Copy it.
Step 6: Paste the URL into your browser and click Enter.
Step 7: You will land on a page with just the photo. Right-click or Ctrl+click the photo, and click on ‘Save Image As’ to save the photo.
Using 3rd Party Apps
Instagram does not allow anyone to download somebody else’s Instagram photos. But that did not stop 3rd party platforms from creating apps that will help just about anybody to save Instagram photos. While 3rd party apps are easy to use, they are not guaranteed to be safe.
When you allow 3rd party apps to access your account, you inevitably risk your data security. There are better and safer ways to do it. Downloading an Instagram image using the URL or web app like DownloadGram is at least safe.
So if you ever deleted your Instagram photos from your phone by accident, or lost your phone (hopefully not), and the only copies are on Instagram, it’s good to know that there are ways for you to get them back.
