No pressure or anything, but your first Instagram post will go down in infamy! (Well, unless you delete it.) If you’ve recently created an Instagram account, picking that first photo is crucial.
Maybe you’re brand new to Instagram. Perhaps you are an old veteran, but starting a new account. Or maybe you are starting an Instagram account for your business. Either way, you’ll want to make a good first impression.
So what is a good first Instagram post option?
If this is a personal account, it might be smart to go with a selfie.
Let people see who you are. Introduce yourself via the caption. Let people know your interests, hobbies and what they can expect to see on your Instagram account. Maybe ask a question and get people talking right from the beginning.
For a business account, you should pick something that sums up what you’re all about.
It could be a product or a slogan. Or maybe you want to start out including your fans, sharing a customer’s post. That gets you engaged with your audience right away.
We know deciding on that important first Instagram post is really tough, so we’re calling in the big guns. We’re going to check out some of the most followed Instagram accounts’ first Instagram posts, and rate them.
Let’s get started:
Beyonce’s First Instagram Post
Here’s a great first Instagram post. Beyonce started her official Instagram account in November 2012. The first photo selection?
The superstar chose to make her first Instagram post count. Her first Instagram post coincided with the 2012 Presidential election. For that reason, she shared a photo of herself in a t-shirt that made a political statement.
Beyonce donned a “Texans for Obama” shirt in her first post, letting all of her followers know where she stood on the 2012 election.
Our rating: A. This was a great first Instagram post. It showed what she star was passionate about, while giving followers a little insight on what posts were to come.
Selena Gomez’s First Instagram Post
The queen of Instagram herself, Selena Gomez, started her account back in 2013. Back then, way before she was the most followed celebrity on the platform, she posted a black and white video first.
The video featured Selena and her dancers posing and then launching into a little dance.
Our rating: C. While this video was cute, and it sure is fun to see a baby faced Selena, it’s not a great choice. As a first Instagram post, this video is a little confusing for followers who were likely looking to see photos of their favorite star.
David Beckham’s First Instagram Post
Good things come to those who wait! Though we had to wait until May 2015 for David Beckham to join Instagram, we were rewarded with his gorgeous first post.
A selfie of David Beckham in bed? We’re pretty sure everyone on Instagram needed that in their lives.
Since he joined we’ve seen plenty more photos of the hunky athlete, and we’re not complaining one bit. And aside from sharing photos of his own pretty face, he often includes his equally adorable family on his Instagram feed.
Our rating: A. Great work, David Beckham. Please keep it up.

Ariana Grande’s First Instagram Post
Ariana Grande opened her Instagram account away back in December 2011. The pop star got started with a really sweet photo, involving an important person in her life.
Not only does Ariana’s first Instagram photo show her with a completely different hair color (red!), it also includes her grandpa. In the snap she’s kissing him on the cheek as he wears his “Ariana army hoodie.”
Our rating: A. This was an adorable choice by Ariana. It’s clear she adores her grandpa and he’s very important to her, so this was the perfect first Instagram photo pick.
Justin Bieber’s First Instagram Post
A blurry filtered picture of traffic? With no caption? It’s safe to say Justin Bieber might have the worst first Instagram post on the site.
Yes, this really is what he chose to lead with back in July 2011. The picture was bad enough, but the fact that he shared it without explanation is more puzzling.
Our rating: F. Justin this is definitely the worst first Instagram post we’ve ever seen. Is it too late to say sorry?
Kylie Jenner’s First Instagram Post
Kylie Jenner has been famous since a young age. When she started her Instagram account back in November 2011 she was already on a hit reality show.
You’d think being in her social media savvy family would mean she’d have an excellent first post. But you’d be wrong!
Kylie Jenner’s first Instagram post was this:
Yep, a blurry photo of a fire. That was the first Instagram post of one of the most followed women in the world. She’s certainly come a long way.
Our rating: D-. Sorry, Kylie, but you could have done so much better! Don’t worry, her big sister showed her how it was done…
Kim Kardashian’s First Instagram Post
Now this is how you do it! When it came time for Kim Kardashian to post her first photo on Instagram in February 2012, she did it perfectly.
This photo was on brand (a selfie, natch!) and even gave a nod to the fact that it was her first post.
“My first instagram pic… Kisses for instagram!” Kim captioned the snap of herself blowing a kiss to the camera.
Our rating: A. Well done, Kim Kardashian.
Justin Timberlake’s First Instagram Post
How about a little humblebrag for a first post? Justin Timberlake served that up back February 2013.
The star posted this black and white photo of a freeway. But unlike Justin Bieber, he at least added a caption.
“Take a good look, only time you’ll see no traffic on the 101. Headed to Staples. #JTGrammys” Justin captioned this boring snap. He alluded to attending the Grammys and even added his own egotistical hashtag to the caption, making this eyeroll-worthy.
Our rating: D+. It’s boring and it comes across like he’s bragging, not making us fans of Justin’s first shot at Instagram.
Chrissy Teigen’s First Instagram Post
The world was given a gift in March 2012 — Chrissy Teigen joined Instagram. The hilarious and loveable star signed on to the social media platform and posted a photo of her famous hubby.
Like Kim Kardashian, Chrissy gave a nod to the face that she was new to the platform with her caption.
“I’m officially instagramming.” Chrissy wrote about the close-up snap of hubby John Legend.
Our rating: B. Following Chrissy means seeing a lot of snaps of her husband John Legend. Though we would have loved a couple’s selfie, this was a good pick. Lucky for us, these days she also shares plenty of photos of their adorable kiddos, Luna and Miles.
Kendall Jenner’s First Instagram Post
In November 2011 Kendall Jenner graced Instagram with her presence. Her first Instagram photo? A blurry picture from the happiest place on earth: Disneyland.
The snap, which had a filter overtop, didn’t include any of her famous family members. Nope, it was just a random snap from inside the amusement park.
Our rating: D. Though it was an interesting location, the photo was pretty dull.
What’s The Bottom Line?
When it’s time to select your first Instagram post, make sure it can stand the test of time. You want to look back and be proud of your first photo.
Now have fun picking!
